Motorola Licenses ARM Architectural Families and Implementations to Expand DigitalDNA Embedded Processor Portfolio

CAMBRIDGE, UK and AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--December 4, 2000--ARM (Nasdaq:ARMHY; LSE:ARM); and Motorola (NYSE:MOT - ) today announced they have signed a licensing agreement expanding Motorola's industry leading DigitalDNA(TM) embedded processor portfolio from its Semiconductor Products Sector to include the ARM microprocessor families and implementations.

Under terms of the agreement, the ARM product line will join Motorola's PowerPC(TM), M-CORE(TM) and ColdFire® families of 32-bit embedded processors. With this addition, Motorola enables customers to leverage ARM's extensive software and tools portfolios together with Motorola's systems and wireless expertise in the development of total systems solutions.

``We are responding to customers' needs by enabling them to maximize their investments in ARM core-based software systems, applications and tools while being served by the world's number one embedded solutions provider,'' said Fred Shlapak, president of Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector. ``Each of Motorola's processor families is a successful industry standard that will continue to be actively enhanced and supported. The ARM processor line is another industry standard that joins our winning portfolio of 32-bit architectures.''

``This agreement will enable Motorola to enhance and proliferate the ARM architecture in the digital marketplace by incorporating our technology as a building block in its DigitalDNA portfolio,'' said Robin Saxby, chairman & CEO of ARM. ``The ARM architecture is well aligned with Motorola's roadmaps for the wireless and other markets. This broad-ranging agreement, spanning a comprehensive portfolio of ARM technology, underlines the depth of Motorola's commitment to the ARM architecture.''

Motorola initially plans to introduce systems solutions for wireless applications based on the ARM architecture. These highly integrated solutions are expect to be introduced over the next 12 months and include chipsets, software, development tools, and reference platforms to enable manufacturers to quickly bring new, innovative wireless products to market.

``As an ARM licensee and architectural partner, we will be able to use our extensive microprocessor and systems knowledge to create compelling solutions that precisely meet our customers' needs,'' Shlapak said.

ARM cores are noted for their excellent combination of high performance, small die size, low power consumption, tight code density, and multiple supply sources. Instruction set compatibility between processor families promotes design reuse and reduces software development time.
